Plumbing for Custom Homes: How to Plan Mechanical Rooms, Hot Water, and Hydronic Heat the Smart Way

Plan mechanical rooms with room to grow

Your mechanical room is the heart of your home’s plumbing and heating systems, and it needs more than a leftover closet.

Indirect water heaters pair with a boiler or hydronic system, using the same heat source to provide both space heating and domestic hot water. This can create a highly efficient, integrated solution in colder climates like Kalispell’s.  Don't forget about the space under the kitchen sink as well!  You might want to add a reverse osmosis system or a disposal after the fact.

Hydronic and radiant heat done right

Hydronic radiant heat is a natural fit for Montana winters. Properly designed systems provide even, quiet warmth without the drafts or dust movement common with forced-air. Zoning lets you fine-tune temperatures room by room—keeping bedrooms cooler, living spaces warmer, or garages and shops comfortable only when you need them.

When hydronics are coordinated with your domestic hot water system, you can often gain efficiency with a shared heat source and smarter controls. The key is to design tubing layouts, manifolds, and boiler sizing early in the custom home process, not after framing is complete.

Future-proofing luxury and custom features

Custom homes often add spa-like bathrooms, accessory dwellings, or outdoor living spaces over time. Planning for these possibilities during construction can save significant costs later.

That might mean roughing in lines for a future basement bathroom, leaving space and piping paths for an outdoor shower or hot tub, or designing manifolds and mechanical room layouts that can support additional zones without major rework. Thoughtful pipe routing, shutoff placement, and valve access all make future changes easier and less disruptive.
